First I was dying to finish high school and start college. And then I was dying to finish college and start working. And then I was dying to marry and have children. And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough for school so I could return to work. And then I was dying to retire.
And now I am dying…
And suddenly I realized I forgot to live.”
The present moment doesn’t exist to most people because what they are really interested in is the next moment. This present moment is the most precious gift that we’ve been gifted with. It is an amazing feeling to live fully present in the moment. Only when you are present are you truly alive and fully aware. Your life consists entirely of the present moment. So often in life we are always thinking. We think about the past, wishing that we could go back or change it. Or we get stuck thinking about the future, the to-do lists, or false scenarios we’ve created in our heads. All of those thoughts are pure illusions because all that there truly is this present moment. We are always trying to reach the destination, but the journey is the destination. Thinking about the future and overthinking the past has become a habit for many. We think of time as a one way motion. From the past, through the present and into the future. Life moves from the past to the future in such a way that what happens now and what will happen, is always the result of what has happened in the past. People live as if this moment was an obstacle that they need to overcome in order to get to somewhere better.
It is rare that we live completely present in the moment, truly cherishing everything this present moment holds. We get distracted from this present moment and overwhelmed with all our thoughts. Thinking about the to-do list, over analyzing the past, or wondering when the moment you’ve been waiting for will get here takes us away from the moment of NOW. We caught up with social media, as well as little things that make no difference in our life at all. This moment is all that we truly have. If you are constantly thinking about the past, you live your life trapped in a conceptual reality of thought forms which assumes a greater significance for you than the current reality of now. Think about it… You don’t know how long you are granted here and the past is forever gone. But what you do know is that you have this amazing moment, in your hands, shining like a star and melting like a snowflake.
The choice is yours on how you are going to embrace the moment. You have the option to continue living in your head; thinking of the past or thinking about your future. Or you have the choice to embrace this moment and to be fully alive. Go live this moment. Spend time with your loved ones, take a yoga class, swim in the ocean, and connect with mother Earth. Drop the cell phone, the computer, the to-do list, the unnecessary thoughts, and just BE HERE NOW. The current step that you are taking is primary, the destination is secondary. The quality of the destination depends on this present step. Be true to life by being true to this moment.
